GIOVANNI PASCOLI (Italy, 1855 - 1912)

CONVIVIO,

from "Myricae"

O convitato della vita, è l'ora.
Brillino rossi i calici di vino;
tu né bramoso più, né sazio ancora,
lascia il festino.
Splendano d'aurea luce i lampadari,
fragri la rosa e il timo dell'Imetto,
sorrida in cerchio tuttavia di cari
capi il banchetto:
tu sorgi e...Triste, su la mensa ingombra,
delle morenti lampade lo svolo
lugubre, lungo! triste errar nell'ombra,
ultimo, solo!

TRANSLATION

THE FEAST

Up, guest of life, it's time.

Cups of wine may shine red;

you're not thirsty anymore, and not yet full,

so leave the party.

Chandeliers may sparkle of golden lights,

rose and thyme from Imetto may give their scent,

the banquet may smile

from dear people sit in a circle:

You rise and... Sad, upon the crammed table,

the dying lamps gloomily sway,

for long! You sadly wander in shade,

the last one, alone!
